Dance Remains Current in This Historical Place

Ballroom Dancing has changed over the years as is evident in the "That was Then" "This is Now" shots from the Roseland Ballroom. They had Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Benny Goodman, Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Harry James, and so many more one could list them all night long. Today one might say we've diversified. Rock-n-Roll, Disco, House, Hip-Hop, and Rap have completely changed what one might consider dance music. But some how that element of ballroom from years ago continues to find it's way and one might argue, has even seen a resurgence in the last few years. With movies like "Shall we Dance", "Mad Hot Ballroom", and "Take the Lead" Hollywood has taken some notice. TV is in on the action too. "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" were among the top shows for their respective time slots last year. Michael Buble is selling a ton of CD's of old standards, Christina Aguilera has given up the "Dirty" look.... for a more classic retro style, and Emmitt Smith might now be known more for his dancing than for his football achievements. However you slice it, Ballroom dancing in one form or another continues to find a place in our society and will for years to come. CF
